A classic French thriller based on a novel by Georges Simenon.  Jean-Pierre Darroussin's portrayal of a brow- beaten husband is outstanding, while Kahn's script brings wit and imagination to a straightforward story.  Kahn allows his characters room to breathe, and the film consequently transcends its genre foundations to become an engrossing story.
