The Golden Door (PG)

Thursday 6th November 2008
Nuovomondo
Language: Italian/English

Set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily, Salvatore, a dirt poor widower, decides to emigrate to America, where the rivers are milk and the streets are paved with gold.  Before they embark he meets Lucy, a British "lady", who for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before arriving at Ellis Island.  Quaint, funny and surreal.

Score:    78.79%

Some members' comments:

A wonderful film & stunning imagery.
Technically excellent, educational & riveting.
Loved it.  Magical realism.
Nice to see life in its essence; no murders, blood; imaginative, lovely photography & casting.
Superb photography.
Excellent photography.
Visually stunning at times.
Visually compelling - slightly weird.

A topical antidote to American exceptionalism x 2.
Wonderful photography & atmosphere but prefer something more explicit.
Too many tight shots in the dark, but a good history lesson.
Unusual, strange, weird etc x 3.

Too slow.

Started well enough but then ..... Didn't need C Gainsbrough.
