Red Lights (Feux Rouges) (15)

Thursday 5th February 2009
Cedric Kahn 2004 - 105 mins
France
Language:  French

A classic French thriller based on a novel by Georges Simenon.  Jean-Pierre Darroussin's portrayal of a brow- beaten husband is outstanding, while Kahn's script brings wit and imagination to a straightforward story.  Kahn allows his characters room to breathe, and the film consequently transcends its genre foundations to become an engrossing story.

Score:   75%

Some members' comments:

I loved the build up, leisurely pace of tense narrative and unique French style.  In other film cultures so much would end up on the cutting room floor.
Steady build up in tension - impressive.
Convincing acting.  His driving DID worry me.
Tense.
It almost made up for last week, but nothing would.
The wages of sin end up as light marital therapy.

Couldn't help comparing him with Andrew Marr.
Hard work until it came together at the end.
Too long, but enjoyed the Debussy.
Car journey and telephoning seemed to last forever.
