Happy go Lucky (15)

Thursday 11th September 2008
Mike Leigh 2008 - 118 mins
UK
Language: English

Thirty year old Poppy cheerfully navigates a seemingly haphazard London life, where she shares a flat with a girlfriend and works as a primary teacher.  Leigh's trademark, wit and eye for contemporary London is much in evidence.  While the film doesn't shy away from serious issues, it's a more optimistic Leigh at work here and it is the humour and compassion that linger.

Some members' comments:

Wonderful acting.
Gorblimey - a chirpy cockney sparra.
Unusual and happy.
She was a bit hyper but I liked the jauntiness of youth, and the music.
Kept me smiling.

Are Mr Leigh and his characters trapped in the 1970s?
None so queer as folks.
Shame about irritating main character.
The first half might have been better with English subtitles.

I did not enjoy it at all.
Very average - I expected more from ML.  Too happy people are annoying.
What was that about?  Happiness or what?

How irrtating was she?
Irritating people - how awful these people are teaching children.
What a waste of time.
Pointless film.  that's what you get when you can't be bothered with a script.  No remark too trivial. Actors 30 going on 5.
Awful.
