Atash (Thirst) (12A)

Thursday 19th November 2009
Tawfik Abu Wael 2004 - 110 mins
Israel/Palestine
Language: Israeli/Arabic

Living in a remote region, an Israeli Arab family suffers under the rule of their tyrannical father. This debut feature from Palestinian Wall has a lot going for it; striking cinematography, fine music and strong first time performances from a cast of non-professionals.  A film about freedom and rebellion , need and desire, fear and oppression, tradition and change.

Score:  60.71%

Some members' comments:

A gripping film.  superb acting giving good insight into the weak position a wife is in - in a culture like that.
Gripping - one got used to the pace - great ending.
Acting, photography plot amid an engrossing scenario in one small location.
Good photography.
Excellent photography, joyless, a sense of being trapped.

Great photography, but oh so heavy.
Long winded.
Grimly realistic.
Depressing.  Too much self-inflicted misery.

Unbelievable.
Ludicrous.
